One is the ever-increasing emphasis on academic success in our target-driven culture; Fear of failure can also be accentuated by other, more local, factors. Insecurity about doing things incorrectly causes many people to unconsciously sabotage their chances for success. In the weeks leading up to it, their level of anxiety rises, resulting in sleepless nights, a poor appetite, depression and even self-harm.Doctoral students thus afflicted usually encounter extreme difficulties in writing their dissertations, amid anxiety that their work is not of a sufficiently high standard. Another received a mark in the low 70s but was convinced that the examiners had made a mistake and that, in reality, he had failed.This fear is difficult to eliminate and it poisons students’ attitudes to their work. The findings make an important contribution to the fear of failure and morality literatures. In fact, discussing the experience of failure as chance to find alternative sources of self-esteem – not just through performance and achievement – may be the best advice you could give to students who struggle with performance anxiety and self-worth issues! This article discusses fear of failure, its symptoms, causes, student expectations for themselves, and implications for counseling. It means scoring anything below the top grade.

One In my experience, one big growth factor in counselling services’ workloads is the debilitating fear of failure experienced by an increasing number of students, especially at more prestigious universities. This blog post aims to help all higher education professionals who have regular contact with students to conceptualise the fear of failure psychologically and will provide some pointers on how best to advise students who suffer from this fear.You can support your students simply by helping them to better understand what they are afraid of. Instead, they worry that they might have missed some crucial article in the secondary literature, or omitted some decisive experiment, or that their analysis just isn’t good enough.But where is this all-consuming fear of failure coming from?
Fear of failure has been defined as “persistent and irrational anxiety about failing to measure up to the standards and goals set by oneself or others” (American Psychological Association 2007, p. 369).Failure fearers tend to be anxious, high in self-doubt, and are uncertain about their ability to avoid failure or achieve success (Covington 1992). Usually, they would agree that it has improved, regardless of their current grades. What might be regarded as a ‘decent result’ by one student could be considered a ‘huge failure’ by another. However, many other factors appear relevant.
Unlike a specific phobia (eg fear of heights, fear of spiders), the anxiety around anticipated failure is highly subjective and often vague in nature.Strictly speaking, it is not failure itself that students fear, but certain negative consequences associated with underachieving. Expecting to keep one’s excellent grades while competing with classmates who might have stronger backgrounds in certain topics is unrealistic. Fear of failure and sport experience may be important considerations when trying to understand antisocial behaviour in student athletes in education and sport; moreover, the potential effect of overall fear of failure and of sport experience on this frequency does not differ by sex. Indeed, students who fear failure will earn lower grades, but will also be less satisfied with their grades, regardless of their performance. Schools – particularly prestigious private schools – often project a highly competitive ethos, causing some students to drop out of the race, while others enter it with an obsessive determination to succeed. Fear of failure can be so strong that avoiding failure eclipses the motivation to succeed. At times, I forgot that who I was wasn’t what I did. A major intellectual and emotional revision of priorities is required: a willingness to relish the intellectual challenge presented by their course while also seeking a better work-life balance.
