The number and pace of the kanji are very good. Elementary Japanese is designed for students who are just beginning their study of Japanese at the first–:year college level or on their own.

I ended up using youtube videos and Japanese forums outside of this coursebook to actually be able to understand what it wanted from me.

This is a book that's for the first semester for college Japanese! There is a LOT of information, including etymology and cultural notes related to the language. Elementary Japanese is a text book which is particularly designed for students who have keen interest in learning Japanese.

The course it's explained in a way that outlines the most important concepts that should be retained in order to build understanding of coming explanations.The instructor has an easy to grasp way of explaining things, the course it's ideal for visual learners and people who could do a brief recap of what was previously discussed in order to progress into the following chapters.


I didn't find it helpful for self-study.I am self studying using this book and book two of the series.

I have not been to Japan for about 10 years now and my Japanese is a bit rusty, decided to brush up using Elementary Japanese 1 and 2 and with the CDs my Japanese skills are getting back to where they were for my upcoming trip to Japan. NHK is Japan’s national news service.

This book is excellent for the student who is self studying, because all of the grammar an vocabulary are explained thoroughly.

Elementary Japanese is a text book which is particularly designed for students who have keen interest in learning Japanese. They are well-worth the price, have nice and sturdy hard-covers, and I'm sure I'll keep them forever as a reference.

My level is a bit higher than the elementary level but I want to start at the beginning and work my way up. However, there are also some flaws. There is very little left up to the student to try to figure out; and though the exercises are designed for use in a classroom, they can be easily adapted. This course will teach the student a lot of specific insights, the program of the course allows the students to be focused, engaged and gives them a chance to complete the course in a goal oriented manner working at their own pace. I was drawn to the chapter organization of this book, which is shorter and more focused than the Genki textbooks. First of all, not all the vocabulary listed is used, therefore I have no idea of the context of some words. It also comes with a CD that contains the readings, pronunciation of all the vocabulary, and additional exercises. OveWhile I found this to be a good companion, it didn't teach me (a self-learner) in depth very much, probably leaving it up to the teacher to do so. From chapter 2, there's no romaji and all the dialogues are written in kana and kanji only, which makes my studying process less distractful.

EJ has clear grammar and usage explanations. Japanese phrases effectively, by listening to the audio of each sentence. I also found the way they introduced things to be a little backwards (such as doing phrases before learning hiragana, though I can see why that'd be alright in a classroom as they want you chatting and all that). Elementary Japanese is less expensive than other written resources, despite having a CD included to it.
